#UST with biotics

How much of what you write in Opus about their armor is stuff from canon versus your own creation? How do you go about figuring out the tech in satisfying ways? I'd never realized how much I love the ins and outs of sci fi armor until Opus, but I'm watching The Expanse for the first time and Bobbie's armor is giving me similar vibes, and I guess I just wanna talk about sci fi armor and how it's secretly *so* emotional. XD
Canon is the jumping off point, and from there it's a mix of my own headcanons, brainstorming with Real Life Romance Option, and in the case of armor, @sinvraal's armor bible, which pretty much lives in an open tab on my browser (along with the wiki page on codex entries and a great galaxy map showing relay connections). I also use this wonderful comic as a reference.
The codex entries, especially from ME1, give you so much great stuff to work with, for biotics, weapons, armor, space combat, etc. etc. There are a lot of holes and places to color in and outside the lines, but the framework is a gold mine.
Armor in particular is SUCH a fun playground, not only because it's great sci fi and serves as one of the building blocks for the world of Mass Effect, but it gives you so many opportunities for characterization. How a character customizes their armor, the HUD preferences, the wear and tear, habits around its maintenance and upkeep, etc. etc. can tell you SO MUCH about them.
And in addition to making a character a total badass, armor can be astonishingly intimate. One the scenes I am most proud of is the armor scene in Cantata where Kaidan and Sam do their suit checks. I don't know if I've ever written a scene with more UST. One of my greatest moments as a writer was @urrone telling me that in a scene where there was no skin to skin contact at all, "I don't know if it's possibly to have sex with your armor on, but if it is, those two just did." XD
I LOVE attempting the harder science stuff in Opus and could talk about it all day, but yeah, armor is the shit and I love writing about it. Also, The Expanse is incredible and I would sell my soul to Bobbie Draper for a penny. Sam, btw, takes some influence from Amos Burton. My Admiral Hackett takes a lot of influence from Chrisjen Avasarala. He just swears a lot less, lol.

this started as a prompt fill over a year ago. I ended using that prompt for a different fic, and left this one incomplete... until yesterday, when I just happened to find it while perusing my library of untitled documents. since the timing was so perfect, I decided to finish it up for this year's N7 day 😁
Happy N7 Day!
Beatrix Shepard/Kaidan Alenko (with a bonus Beatrix&Ashley), ME1 pre-relationship pining & UST. prompt was originally "top of head kisses"
--
“Rough night, Commander?” Kaidan’s amusement was clear even before Beatrix turned to see him smirking at her from the medbay’s doorway.
“You should see the other guy.” She grinned as she hopped up to sit on the edge of one of the medical beds. She poked gingerly at the bruise around her eye. It was a spectacular thing, black and red and covering the entirety of her left eye and cheek. “Guess I got knocked around a little worse than I thought yesterday at that warehouse. It barely even hurt at the time.”
“I guess so,” he murmured as he dug around in one of the cabinets, clearly familiar with its contents. He pulled out a bottle and poured a couple of pills into his hand, casually popping them into his mouth and washing them down with a glass of water.
Beatrix didn’t comment. It was either a biotic thing or a migraine thing and either way it wasn’t any of her business. “Be honest with me, Alenko. How bad do I look?”
She had meant it flippantly, but Kaidan took her question seriously. He crossed the rest of the space between them and lifted her chin with a careful hand to tip her face toward the light. He studied her in silence for a long moment, gaze as gentle as his touch. She fought to keep herself still, to not lean into the warmth and safety that his smile promised her. Not the time, Triss.
“You look fine, Shepard,” he said eventually, letting her go all at once.
It was clearly not the word he wanted to use, and she couldn't help teasing just a little. “Just fine, huh?”
He chuckled, but didn’t rise to the bait. Probably for the best. “Do you want me to fix it up for you, or are you one of those people who wears bruises as a badge of honor?”
She barely even hesitated before nodding. “Would you mind? I was gonna ask Doc, but I guess she’s not in.”
Beatrix let her eyes flutter shut at the first cool touch of the medigel. She'd expected him to just slap a patch on it and call it good, but instead he carefully applied it by hand, gentle fingers sweeping over her brow and cheek. He probably just didn't want to risk a patch that close to her eye.
Or at least, that's the excuse he would use if she asked. Kaidan was always aware of how precarious their situation was. He always had an excuse and an escape plan at the ready, should he need them.
"There," he announced with a final brush against her cheek. "In a few minutes you’ll be right as rain."
She opened her mouth to thank him, but what came out was a playful “Not gonna kiss it and make it better?”
She cringed inwardly. All those carefully drawn lines they'd been dancing around and Beatrix just charged right through them. It’s arguably what she’d built her career around, true, but she didn’t want to be like that with him.
She was propelled out of her thoughts by Kaidan's sudden proximity as he leaned closer once more. Faster than she could react, he closed the gap entirely and pressed a quick but firm kiss to her temple, right next to the healing bruise.
She stared at him like she'd never seen him before. He looked very smug about it.
"Is that better?" he asked, in a voice as soft and rich as velvet.
Beatrix just gaped at him, still struggling to find her voice past her surprise. Before she could, the door opened with a quiet hiss.
"Triss, are you in--" Ashley stopped in the doorway, keen eyes darting back and forth between Commander and Lieutenant as Kaidan stepped back to a more appropriate distance. A shrewd grin spread over her face. "Hope I’m not interrupting anything."
"Kaidan was just helping me put my face back together." She pointed at the bruise. It was a flimsy excuse, but hopefully still visible enough to be a valid one.
“Damn!” Ashley stepped the rest of the way into the room and grabbed Beatrix’s chin to tilt her head around for a better look at the black eye. She was much less careful than Kaidan had been. “That’s one hell of a shiner, skipper. Did you get punched by a geth, or are you getting in bar fights that we don’t know about?”
"Part of an underground fight club, is my guess," Kaidan said lightly.
"Cute," Beatrix deadpanned. To Ash, she added, "I got hit with the business end of a krogan shotgun."
"Those mercs yesterday? Makes sense." She let go of Beatrix's face and leaned on the edge of the bed next to her. "I knew one of ‘em rang your bell pretty good, I didn’t think you had trophies from it."
"Hopefully not for much longer." She couldn't help but glance Kaidan's way; he smiled slightly when their eyes met.
“Could be fun to see what the tabloids speculate about it.” Ashley laughed and bumped her shoulder with Beatrix’s. “But that’s not why I’m here. Joker says he just made the last jump for that rescue mission of yours. Should arrive in twenty, if you wanna get ready.”
“And he couldn't tell me this himself because…?”
She shrugged. “Hell if I know. It's Joker.”
Beatrix shook her head, laughing. “Fair enough. Suit up, Chief.”
“Music to my ears, Commander.” She hopped off the table and gave Kaidan a look in which she was clearly saying something, though Beatrix couldn’t tell what. “I'll leave you to it.”
Then she was gone.
Kaidan rolled his eyes at Ashley’s antics, but his smile was fond. “She means well.”
“I know.” Ashley Williams was many things, but shy or cagey she wasn’t. If she had an opinion on something, she expressed it. Luckily, so far her opinions on their… potential situation, were positive. And impatient.
Beatrix shook herself back to the present and turned a considering eye on Kaidan. “Are you okay for a trip planetside, or should I call Liara?”
“I’m fine, Triss.”
She wasn’t sure she believed him. He had come in here for painkillers, after all, and she caught him sometimes attempting to massage away a headache when he thought she wasn’t looking. Still, if he was in any serious pain right now, he hid it well, and she trusted him to know his limits.
“Okay. Suit up.”
She didn’t miss the brief, relieved sag of his shoulders before he said, “Yes, ma’am.” She didn’t call him on it, just followed him out of the sickbay and toward their lockers.
#beatrix shepard#triss/kaidan#shepard/kaidan#my favorite thing about this is the slow dissolution of formality over the course of the fic#from commander to alenko and shepard to kaidan and triss#I feel like they do that a lot in me1#you know triss is an engineer but I'm half tempted to make her a vanguard if only because of that 'charging right through them' line

The Way We Fall Apart (Overwatch)
Strike Commander Morrison stared out the window, watching the slow passage of clouds across the idyllic blue sky. For one moment, he allowed himself to drop the weight that dragged at his shoulders, the pain that squeezed his lungs until every breath hurt. His failures were damn near paralyzing, even after all these years.
Jack chuckled in the back of his throat, soft and humorless. He’d thought that joining the army and volunteering for the soldier enhancement program would allow him to help people. It helped me kill them mostly, Jack thought, refusing to look at the report lying open on his desk. He didn’t need to read the names of agents lost during his tenure, he knew the faces well enough.
Overwatch had started to unravel, falling apart at the seams while Jack fought to hold it together through sheer willpower. He'd escaped to the Swiss headquarters as a final bastion against the questions and accusations, buying time until he could twist the lies and half truths into something that almost resembled reality. He had long since abandoned plausible deniability, standing squarely in the target that the U.N. painted on his chest. It was almost laughable. Almost.
Swallowing the bitterness that threatened to choke him, Jack wondered if it was too early for a drink. Noon had come and gone at least, that had to be close enough. He had never drank before joining the army. Just another slip into the darkness I wasn’t willing to admit, Jack thought. Vincent had tried to warn him, warned that he was losing touch--No. Jack forced that thought to the back of his mind where it belonged. He couldn’t allow himself to go down that road again. Vincent was better off without him, especially now.
Exhaling sharply through his nose, Jack opened the cabinet below the window and reached for the bottle of scotch he kept there. Except, it was missing. A snort echoed from behind him. “Predictable.”
“Gabe.” Jack turned toward the shadows, tipping his head as the form materialized in the sunlight. He had long since stopped wondering how the man absorbed shadows around him to blend into any canvas he chose.
A slight smirk curved across the dark lips. “Look at you, still playing the boy scout despite the hell raining down around you.”
Gabriel sat the bottle on the desk, every movement reminding Jack of an overloaded spring ready to snap. He’d always been that way, unpredictable and volatile, dark as sin and twice as deadly. Gabe's laugh held even less amusement than Jack’s had. “Those that bother calling me anything besides bastard these days prefer Reyes.”
Jack knew that, as surely as he knew that nothing good could come from the man standing in his office. He should have felt anger, waves of fury that threatened to pull him under. While Jack hadn’t been able to put his finger on the blood, he knew Reyes was the one destroying Overwatch. Blackwatch had become a law to its own; Jack scrambled to hide the worst as sanctions came down and funding dried up.
It didn’t take a genius to put the pieces together. But, Jack didn’t like the picture they formed, so he ignored it. His willing blindness had almost run its course, though. Placing two shot glasses on the polished surface of his desk, Jack jutted his chin toward the man. “Reyes.”
The grin that crossed Gabe's face stretched the gaunt skin covering his skull, turning Jack’s stomach. He remembered the easy smile that Gabriel had offered in training, the infectious laughter that could put anyone at ease. It wasn’t a jump to recall that same throaty chuckle that had made his blood heat in a way that it hadn’t since Vincent. But, the traces of that man were lost beneath whatever this was.
Jack filled the cups to the rim and pushed one toward his old friend. Gabe lifted it in his left hand, right falling near the shotgun on his hip. Running his tongue across dry lips, Jack followed the movement. Unbidden, his eyes flicked to the other side of the office where his pulse rifle leaned against the wall. "Come to kill me?"
"I haven't decided," Reyes answered, caressing his weapon like a lover.
Jack raised his glass, meeting the dark eyes he used to know so well. "No sense in wasting the alcohol then."
The burn made Jack's breath shudder, and he couldn't help but recall the first time that Gabriel had done that. They'd just gotten back to base from a "training mission" that left half of their team dead and dozens of civilians bleeding out in the sand. They'd been young and dumb, eager to change the world only to watch it shatter with every move they made. They had shared a room back then, when there were still enough soldiers alive to need bunkmates.
One minute, Jack and Gabriel had been sitting with their backs against the wall passing cheap vodka back and forth, then they were tangled together. Jack still didn't know who had moved first. Their defenses had crumbled to dust as they fought to rebuild each other. That had been the first of many dark nights where their only solace came from the lies they told themselves.
Jack swallowed, considering his options. There was a slim possibility that he could roll out of his chair and reach his rifle before Reyes raised his gun. He could throw down a biotic field and hope the man's aim had gotten worse over the years. But, even if that all went perfectly, Jack didn't know if he could shoot Gabriel. He sighed, deep in his chest. "What did they do to you, Gabe?"
Gabriel threw back his alcohol, then tossed the glass, shattering it against the wall. "It wasn't all them."
The words were meant to sting, but they burned like a brand. Things had changed when Jack had been named Strike Commander. He’d thought Blackwatch would be enough for Gabriel, something to occupy him and provide an outlet for his rage. But, they'd started falling apart soon after, battle lines clearly drawn. The deeper into darkness Gabe descended, the muddier the distinction between right and wrong became.
"I did my best by you," Jack sighed, trying to find anger or fear beneath the bone numbing weariness he felt. "It isn't too late, you know? It doesn't have to end this way."
Alarms blared through the building as security warnings flashing across the wall of screens. In the distance, something exploded, but Jack only had eyes for Gabe. Reyes raised his weapon, pointing it at the center of Jack's chest. "Yes, it does."

10 Facts: Katja Shepard please! (this should be no surprise I'm asking for her LOL)
YAY!
TEN FACTS:
One of Katja’s favourite leisure activities is munching a plate of sugarsnaps with her hamsters Millie and Dixie. The sugarsnaps are a delicacy grown by the Salarians on Sur’Kesh and are far more refined than the ones grown on Earth. It’s one of the few luxury items on the Normandy’s manifest. She also sometimes shares them with her friends. Sam LOVES them and regularly played chess with Katja to win a ration.
I’ve already mentioned that she collects perfumes but here’s another thing she loves: cute pictures (mainly old school paintings) of sunflowers. They cheer her up. Kaidan got her a bunch (real ones) for their Citadel Date!
She hates wearing flats or pumps, she’s a boots only lass, even the sandals with the floral gown are an exception. A rare one at that!
She loves Slavic songs and is a huge fan of Dmitri Hvorostovsky (Who was fondly called Dima during his career). She has his entire discography on her omnitool and even though he died over a hundred years before she was born, she still carries a torch for him.
She loves summer. Sunshine, the ocean…..one of the sports activities she loved during N7 training was deep diving. She’s like a fish in water and trust me, she wears a bathing suit/bikini like nobody’s business.
She grew up as bilingual (Russian and English) and became fluent in Italian and Galaxy Basic during N7 training. She loves languages and picked up some Rakha’ist (The drell language) from Thane while they were together. The first words he taught her were soul (luc’iast) and love (marj’ast).
She and Sam spent several hours in her chambers doing each other’s hair and makeup after Sam borrowed her shower. There was loads of UST but neither of them was brave enough to make a move. Sam knew she was still mourning Thane and Katja felt that Sam deserved someone less battered and she…..was afraid of her being the next person she loved ending up hurt or dead. (Her family. Kaidan on Mars. Garrus on Omega. Thane. Even TIM and his indoctrination. She couldn’t endure the thought. And Sam wasn’t a trained soldier, the risk was too high.)
Miranda developed a new prototype biotic amp for her which, remembering her personal history, was focused on stability moreso than power. (Though it’s twice as powerful as L3s and about as powerful as the L5s in development on Illium. It was based on Asari technology Cerberus nabbed on Thessia. She originally named them Cerb7. Clinical, loyal. After she broke away she renamed it to REVS7. Katja’s initials (The R is for Rose, a little romantic gesture). She loved and respected her that much.
She never had her scars fixed. She already feels like Cerberus stole her life’s history by removing the scars she had on her body when she was spaced. She never wants to forget again.
The little Red Dress and fishnets she wears are a callback to her time with the Reds. She was known as “Flare” then. Not just bc she wore red and black all the time (I hc the original Reds as a Goth group of mainly teenagers and slum survivors. They were tight knit but they were also a mess and had a lot of issues, including criminal activities of various sorts) but because she had dyed her hair Titian red, like this:

Love Trap
Sara Ryder/Liam Kosta, Mass Effect Andromeda, Warnings: just some good old fashioned UST and mild suggestiveness. Also available on AO3
[Sorry if the formatting looks weird, xkit is having issues. If you hit read more it goes back to normal]
If she didn’t look, it wouldn’t be a problem.
Except it was a major problem, and no amount of cajoling or rationalizing would change that fact.
They had been trapped for nearly three hours, the unfortunately small elevator on the Nexus had jolted to a full stop, sending them both flying against the walls with no warning. It seemed no matter what maintenance tried, nothing could get it going again. Even SAM hadn’t been able to figure out the source of the malfunction. In a fit of ire Sara had told SAM to keep quiet and leave her alone. She wasn’t at all surprised to find SAM had obeyed her.
If that wasn’t bad enough, around the two hour mark it seemed the environmental controls had gone out as well, and now it was hot.
God, it was so fucking hot. Like the ass end of Elaaden in the middle of summer. First it had gotten stuffy, just a little uncomfortable, like piling into the Nomad after a scuffle with kett in the sun. Except there was no reprieve, no excess armor to remove or environmentals to fiddle with until cool air blasted across your grimy face.
Only mugginess and discomfort and the fact that Liam was right next to her, radiating even more heat as the smell of their sweat started to grow stronger and mingle. Really, she should find that unpleasant. Of course she found his personal blend of pheromones nice. Of course she had to be tortured that way.
Next came the real torture though, because the bastard had removed his damn shirt in an attempt to get cool. Honestly, did he have an aversion to them? Was Liam Kosta simply predisposed to disliking shirts? Or was she just unlucky (or lucky) enough to always find him without one?
She wasn’t certain anymore. Either way it was annoying.
Sara was pulled from her thoughts as she became dimly aware of Liam stretching out next to her, long legs straightening until the soles of his boots nearly touched the opposite wall.
“Imagine, we come all this way only to die in a lift.”
“We’re not dying in here, Kosta.”
“You say that now, but I’ve seen plenty of thrillers that start off just this way.”
That earned a heavy sigh from Sara. “We’re not living in a vid, Liam.”
“I don’t know, there’s already a low budget vid about the Pathfinder going around. Ryder: saving the universe and punching kett in the face.” He swung out in slow-motion, like it really were a vid, and laughed. That carefree, infectious laugh that she always found more than a little distracting.
“You can’t be serious.” She turned toward him, only to realize he was still shirtless and sweaty and laughing, and immediately regretted everything.
“It’s real, want me to get a copy?” he asked, looking at her with bright eyes. Obviously he was thoroughly amused by the whole thing. She was glad someone was, at least.
“I thought we were dying in here?” She arched an eyebrow at him, and crossed her arms.
“Yeah, well, gotta have some hope. Besides, the more I think about it, the more I realize something.”
Against her better judgement, Sara found herself playing along. “Oh, and what’s that?”
“If anyone has a shot of getting us out of here alive, it’s you, Pathfinder.” Liam nodded, the corner of his mouth quirking gently upward. “Go on then, find the path out.”
“You suck and so do your pathfinder jokes.” She laughed despite herself, none too gently nudging his leg with the toe of her boot.
“Not true.” Liam shook his head. “We all know I am your favorite.”
Sara snorted, hoping to play it off. Liam didn’t need to know he was indeed her favorite, nor did he need to know about her ever growing, annoyingly persistent crush. No one needed to know about that. Not even SAM.
“Mmm,” she hummed, pretending to think it over. “No, pretty sure my favorite is Drack.”
“You just like the getup. Bet if I talked to his bone guy I would once again reign supreme.”
“He does not have a ‘bone guy’.” Then again he was krogan, if any species had ‘bone guys’ it was probably the krogan.
“Nah, I’m pretty sure he does.”
“If you’re going to believe everything Drack tells you in the nomad, then I have a bridge on Sur'Kesh to sell you.”
“One, ha ha.” He laughed mockingly. “Two, that’s not the correct saying.”
“You still got it.”
“Whatever.” He gently shoved her shoulder, and Sara dramatically tipped over sideways with a giggle.
“So how long do you think we’ll be trapped in here?” she asked once she collected herself.
“Dunno, how long has it been now?”
Sara brought up her omni-tool and made a whining noise. “Closing in on four hours. At this rate we’ll be lucky if the kett haven’t taken over by the time we get out.”
“Well, that’s shit. But let’s look on the bright side, we could be stuck here with Drack and his getup.”
“What?” Sara tried to look affronted, hand on her chest. “I would love to be trapped with my favorite right now.”
“Then you’d be packed in here like a sardine, there’s hardly enough room as it is.” To illustrate his point Liam leaned in closer to her, crowding her against the wall. Had it been any other time, or any other person, she might’ve decked them for it. In fact she was sure had punched Scott for less in the past.
At that moment though, she could only sit in a daze, struggling to breathe as his face drew closer. Time seemed to slow down, and Sara became hyper aware of everything Liam: the way his own breath hitched, how he felt through the fabric of her clothes, how his eyes seemed to darken.
Most importantly she was aware of how it looked like he was going to kiss her.
The air around them seemed charged, like it was crackling with energy. As if someone were going to set off a biotic charge. Sara held her breath and waited and then… the elevator lurched and started moving again, a blast of cool air shooting out from the environmentals.
Liam’s eyes were wide as he sat back, putting as much space between them as he could. In a matter of seconds they were both on their feet, Liam had his shirt on, and Sara wasn’t sure how to feel.
The elevator coasted to a gentle stop, the doors sliding open to reveal several people from the maintenance crew and a worried looking Cora.
“Are you both all right?” she asked, looking them over with concern.
“Yeah, fine,” Liam mumbled, head down as he brushed past Sara.
Sara nodded her assent, eyes locked on Liam’s quickly retreating back. She only met Cora’s gaze once he was out of sight.
“Couldn’t have waited five more minutes?” Sara tossed up her hands, and brushed past a highly confused Cora.
She needed a cold shower.

okay so I’m gonna spew out some incoherent thoughts about Moircy (is that what we’re calling it?) because they will not leave me alone
it seems like they’re in more or less the same field, from what I’m getting out of it. with Moira being eleven years older, I wonder if Angela looked up to her as a role model when she was younger.
and if maybe Moira’s pushing the boundaries nudged Angela into doing the same? re: resurrect and whatnot.
obviously they’ve got ethical differences, esp when it comes to using biotic technology to hurt people. maybe it was when it came out that Moira was a part of Blackwatch that Angela kind of went o.o and tried to back off from being on board with her work
as fun as I’m sure it is to work in the shadows and have your employer deny any connection with you because of your sketchy history, I bet Moira was a little jealous that Angela ended up being the shining star of Overwatch’s medic services. her work went so much further, couldn’t they see that?
man it would take some canon-bending but I am ALL about the thought of Moira having been Angela’s mentor and that going sideways with all the controversy and stuff AHHHH
(asjkfa Moira feeling betrayed if Angela stopped looking up to her because of it? fric KC)
idk literally all I want right now is to construct an overlapping backstory for them and mix in the weird hate relationship that’s kind of ust and kind of mutual respect and very (*takes a deep breath of Homestuck*) kismesis-esque. ugh.

Hell of a Birthday
Super duper last minute contribution to N7 day, bc I got conscripted to help my sister give her dog a haircut and my writing time got all chewed up. :P
This was not, Emily reflected morosely, how she thought she’d be spending her birthday. Kaidan being there was about right, but the trapped in prefab housing, being hunted by biotic extremists part was very much not.
“Thoughts?” she murmured to Kaidan, He was standing by the lone window and thus had a better handle on the lay of the land.
“I don’t know, Shepard,” he sighed. “There’s almost a dozen of them out there and they all look pissed.”
“They find our shuttle yet?” Emily asked, one hand tugging her ponytail as she counted thermal clips. Six.
“Doesn’t look like it,” Kaidan replied. “But they’re alert enough there’s no way we’re getting to it without aa fight, so that’s a moot point.”
Emily paced across the small unit as she thought. “Am I the only one who wants to give a piece of my mind to whoever thought we’d have better luck on this mission than anyone else who’s tried?”
“We have fared well with biotics before,” Kaidan reminded her quietly. “Unfortunately, I think some people forget we aren’t a hive mind.”
“Well, considering you and I are the ones it’s biting on the ass this time, I’m still annoyed.” She sighed. “Kaidan, I really don’t want to have to kill these people. It’ll further convince them we see them as the enemy and only want to exterminate them and whatever other delusions they’ve cooked up for themselves. i wish they would’ve just talked to us.”
“I know.” Kaidan shot her a sympathetic smile. “Me, too. But you more than anyone know that things don’t always go the waay we want.”
Emily nodded, tucking hair fallen from her ponytail back behind her ears. “I know.” She bit her lip. “What odds would you give us of making it to the shuttle if we just run for it?”
Kaidan peered out at the circling biotics. “Not great. Like i said, they’re pissed and out for blood. And there’s enough of them our odds of sneaking out are even worse.”
“How long d’you think before they find us?”
“Depends on how long it takes them to get tired of waiting for us to show ourselves and start actively looking.”
“But soon as they do that, we’re screwed anyway.” Emily gestured around the prefab unit. “I mean, unless one of us will fit in that toolbox, there’s nowhere to hide. I feel like we should run for it. There’s no environmental hazards to speak of, the air is breathable, so thee’s not a time limit on outdoor exposure or anything. We just both put up barriers and run like hell, I think we can make the shuttle.”
Kaidan shot her a questioning look. “That’s... kind of reckless for you, Shepard.”
“Not really.” Emily looked over at him. “Where do you think we have better odds? In a cramped prefab where they can’t possibly miss, or out in the open?” Plus, I really don’t want to spend my birthday in here.
Kaidan was still looking at her like he knew she wasn’t telling the whole truth. But finally he nodded. “I see your point. Do you think we should split up, make them divide their forces?”
Emily shook her head. “I’d rather face a dozen of them with you watching my back than half that on my own.”
“Again, see your point.” He studied the people outside for a little longer. “Okay, they’re walking circles, like a patrol. If we wait three more minutes and then hook out the east side of the compound before arcing back toward the shuttle, I think that’ll give us the biggest head start.”
She handed him three of the clips fro his pistol, slotting one into her own gun. “Got it.”
The two of them waited in tense silence for the time to pass and hole to appear in the patrol. When the moment arrived, Kaidan nodded, Emily punched the door controls, and they made a run for it. Emily didn’t pause, didn’t look back--even as she heard the hue and cry rise behind them.
“Just go!” Kaidan hissed behind her, grunting as something impacted against his barrier.
Concern for him almost made her turn around, but she was too worried about tripping on the rocky ground if she didn’t watch her feet. “I’m going!”
She aimed her gun behind them and fired blindly at their pursuers. There was a curse and the sound of someone stumbling as one of her shots actually hit something.
That was lucky, Emily thought. She fixed her gaze on the hill she was barreling towards. She could curve around the far side of it, that would shield her from some of the gunfire and biotic attacks being aimed at them, and start her arc back to the shuttle.
Unfortunately, the extremists caught on to her plan. The closer she got to the hill, the more desperate;y they attacked. Finally, just before she reached a point that would have granted at least partial safety, a biotically enhanced bullet tore through Emily’s barrier and armor both. She yelped--more in surprise than pain--as it sliced into her side. The pain hit a fraction of a second later and took her to her knees. The resulting tumble made it hurt even worse.
She’d barely stopped rolling before she felt Kaidan’s hand on her ar, “Shepard, come on!” He pulled her up with one hand, the other shoving a wave of biotic power at their pursuers. In the moment that bought them, he recognized Emily wouldn’t be able to move fast enough on her own, and easily hauled her up over his shoulders before continuing to run for the shuttle.
It was in sight now, she could see it if she craned her head. They could make it. They could.
Emily pulled Kaidan’s pistol from its spot on his belt--she’d dropped hers when she fell--and started taking shaky potshots at what remained of their pursuit. Each recoil made her side hurt, but Kaidan had his hands full with her. It was only she ran defense.
“Almost there,” Kaidan reported through gritted teeth. His grip on her shifted as he punched in a command on his omnitool.
They were so close she could hear the hiss of hydraulics as the door swung up. Kaidan let her down gently as he could on the shuttle floor and slammed his fist into the door controls. Before it had even closed all the way, he as perched on the pilot’s seat, spinning up the engines and waiting for hte autopilot light to go green.
Emily dragged herself on one elbow until she had a good shot through the rapidly narrowing gap under the door and fired off a whole clip as deterrent. Focusing on something kept her head from spinning, and if she could ust keep it together a little longer...
Kaidan muttered something under his breath, then grunted in satisfaction and hit the autopilot. The engines whined as the shuttle went airborne, on course back to the Normandy. As it rose smoothly through the atmosphere, Kaidan pushed off the seat and knelt next to Emily. “Shepard, let me see.”
“It’s... not that bad,” she panted, shaking her head. The motion made him double and swim before her eyes, and her side spiked with pain, as if eager to make a liar out of her. “...ow...”
“Shepard? Shepard!” Kaidan was beyond worried, calling up his omnitool, working off her armor. “Shepard, stay with me!”
I’d love to... The thought circled in her head, but she couldn’t find the energy to actually say it. Her vision started to darken and Emily blinked in an effort to keep awake, but it was a losing battle.
“Emily! Just hang on! A few more...”
The rest of what he was saying was lost as the darkness won.
<O>
She woke in the Normandy’s medbay, head and side both aching. “...Ow.”
“That sounds about right,” Dr. Chakwas said with a motherly smile. “Good to see you still number among the living, Commander.”
“Feels like just barely,” Emily mumbled.
“You’re not far off,” the doctor said. “If it wasn’t for Kaidan, you wouldn’t.”
“I know.” Emily rubbed her side, feeling the tug of fresh-set medigel. “Where is he?”
“Giving the mission report to Admiral Hackett. He promised to come down as soon as he finished. He’ll be happy to see you’re awake.”
“That’s an understatement,” Kaidan said, quiet but frank, as he entered the room.
“I’ll give you two a minute,” Dr. Chakwas said, slipping from the room.
Emily and Kaidan simply stared at each other for a moment, neither sure what to say.
Kaidan figured it out first. “Don’t scare me like that.”
“Much as I would love to make that promise, you know I can’t,” Emily said, picking at the sheets. “Not in our line of work.”
“Can you at least try?” he compromised, sitting on the edge of her bed.
“That I can do,” she nodded, reaching out with one hand to cover his. “Thanks for carrying me.”
Kaidan half-smiled, concern still lingering in his eyes. “I owed you one. For Virmire.” He turned his hand so he could hold hers and was quiet for a long moment. “So when were you going to tell me today is your birthday?”
“When we got back from the mission,” Emily replied, twirling a lock of hair with her free hand. “Figured we could spend the rest of the day watching vids in my cabin or cuddling or something.”
“I’m sure Dr. Chakwas won’t mind if you get bedrest in in your own bed,” Kaidan said pragmatically. “Sorry your birthday’s turning out not so great.”
Emily shrugged. “Still not my worst one. But let’s not worry about that and get back to making this one better.”
He hesitated the barest fraction of a second before smiling. “Okay. Any ideas?”
“Oh, a couple. Top of the list would be a good kiss from my favorite guy in the galaxy.”
“Well, okay,” he deadpanned. “I’ll go get Garrus, but I don’t know how he’ll react-”
Emily rolled her eyes and whacked his arm. “I meant you, you jerk, and you know it.”
Kaidan leaned forward and kissed the end of her nose. “Like that?”
She grabbed the front of his shirt and pulled him back in so she could kiss the smirk off his face. “Like that,” she corrected.
“You’re right, that is batter,” Kaidan chuckled, hand cupping the nape of her neck as he came back for me.
<O>
When Dr. Chakwas returned, she was easily persuaded to let Emily rest in her own cabin, with Kaidan and her vid collection for company. So that’s exactly what she did. And, on the whole, it wasn’t a bad birthday. Sure, the first part had been a little rough, but the rest more than made up for it.

Competition for Dummies
Competition blog II
Competition is when two organisms have an interaction and during this interaction both species are harmed. Competition is a very important topic both between and within species in ecology and a very important topic in community ecology. This relationship is one of many interacting biotic factors that can heavily affect the community of the culture. Like the majority of the other relationships, this relationship plays a very important role ecologically and economically. There are a couple types of competition and they are: interspecific and intraspecific.
https://www.google.com/url?sa=i&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=images&cd=&ved=2ahUKEwjL4L_E-ILfAhXoyVQKHbeSBCgQjRx6BAgBEAU&url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.andertoons.com%2Fcompetition%2Fcartoon%2F7904%2Fvendors-one-sells-balloons-the-other-sharp-little-pins&psig=AOvVaw18EWSTOTKJkN4B7J0SErIn&ust=1543901798611779
Intraspecific competition is when two of the same species compete for the same resources in an ecosystem and this can make competition for the organisms competing even more intense. Interspecific competition is when two organisms of two different species are competing for a limited resource. If this type of competition gets vicious enough, it has the potential to impact populations and communities of the interspecific species very badly.
https://www.google.com/url?sa=i&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=images&cd=&ved=2ahUKEwjL4L_E-ILfAhXoyVQKHbeSBCgQjRx6BAgBEAU&url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.andertoons.com%2Fcompetition%2Fcartoon%2F7904%2Fvendors-one-sells-balloons-the-other-sharp-little-pins&psig=AOvVaw18EWSTOTKJkN4B7J0SErIn&ust=1543901798611779
A good and simple example of competition in biology would be trees and the flowers that live under them. The tree gets big enough to take away all of the sun of the flowers beneath restricting them of the sunlight they need to be healthy and grow.

How much would small business insurance be?
This is for a marketing assignment. The business is a small gardening and cooking school for children. There are about 8 staff and activities should be pretty safe, since they're aimed at young people. The business is just starting out. What the instructions mention is: 1.property damage 2. public liability 3. vehicle 4. theft 5. personal disability 6. professional indemnity Kids hire their own bus to come here and staff ust use their own cars to go to and from work, so does the vehicle thing need to be included? The building is just a suburban rental property that costs us $400 rent each week. Also, this is just a minor part of the assignment, so a guess is fine. Thanks for any help!""

Does the insurance company have to pay me because my car is less valuable after getting repaired?
I have a 2005 VW Jetta TDI with 112,000 miles. It was hit in the front (not my fault) and did $7,100 worth of damage. It is repaired but if I go to sell my car it will obviously be worth much less because of a bad carfax report. It's not fair to me, so the insurance company should give me about $1,000 for the lost value. I called the insurance company and they gave me the run around and said the value is the same and argued with me. What do I do to get the money?""

Car insurance excess?
My car is now only worth between 200 - 300 so if it was involved in an accident I doubt the insurance would repair...& write it off. Insurance is due for renewal & I have a 250 voluntary excess, which means that I would end up with nothing in the event of a crash. If I increase my vol. excess to 500 the premium goes down by about 30 which looks like a good idea to me but. If my car was written off due to an accident with another vehicle would I still have to pay the 500 vol. excess towards repair of the other vehicle or does the excess relate only to my car in this situation?""
Can my mom have two cars under her name?(insurance)?
I am turning 16 soon and i would like to purchase or lease my own car.. Of course i will pay half of the insurance and as much of the lease price as i can... However, before i do anything... I would like to check a few things.. Is it possible for my mother to have two cars under her name/insurance while I am also registered in her insurance? Like me being registered under my mothers insurance because if i make my own insurance the cost is very expensive.... I tried calculating how much it would cost if my mom had a car under her and another car under my name (inside the same insurance) and it was around 800-900 dollars per month.... *This is ontario..* so is it possible to have two cars under my moms name and none under mine? and will it be expensive as me having a car under my name and the same for the other car under my moms name? thanks!""

""When will my car insurance rates get cheaper, due to having a clean driving record?""
I know I didn't do the best job asking the question, but I'll try to be short and sweet. I'm going to turn 18 in one month and 5 days. I got my license exactly one year ago, November 14th,2009. In January 2010, I got into a small accident, it was during my midterms at school, was a little stressed, but I rear-ended somebody, sadly not in my crappy car that would've cost barely anything to fix, but in my fathers expensive car. Now there was no damage done to the other car, and barely any damage done to my fathers, but because the airbags deflated (which ended up being the most expensive thing to fix) it was a hefty amount to pay. Insurance covered it (geico) and they advertised that the first accident wouldn't effect our rates. Well they lied and it did, so our rates went up because of my one accident. Since the incident, my parents have not got into an accident in at least 7 years, and since my accident all i have received is a few parking tickets. All in all, what I'm asking is; when are my insurance rates going to go back down? I'm going to remain on my parents insurance for a while, just because its cheaper etc etc... and I know I'm still under 25, and a guy, but will they ever go back to the original price they were at when I got my license? (before they got raised)""
Should I buy car insurance or not?
I am a teenage driver of 16. Insurance is very high for a teenager. My parents have Allstate Car Insurance for four of their cars including a Toyota Corolla which im going to be driving. The Corolla is covered by AllState insurance. I have a California Driver's License and live in California. About 6 months ago, my mom asked the insurance company whether the insurance would cover the car if she lent the car to someone and the insurance company said that they would cover the car as soon as the person who borrowed the car has a VALID DRIVERS LICENSE. I have a valid drivers license but I am under 18 (I am 16). The insurance person did not say anything about age. My question is whether it is necessary or not to buy insurance for myself. It will be very expensive and I do not want to pay for it but I will If i have to. Do I have to get my own insurance for the car or not? If I dont buy insurance and I drive the corolla and get pulled over, am I okay or will I have problems?""

I need help finding affordable health insurance for my family?
My husband has a job currently that offers health insurance for us, BCBS of NC great insurance but his job doesn't pay enough for us to survive now that we have a new baby. What's wrong with car insurance?
I am a safe driver. I've never had a car accident or ticket. As a consequence of my choices, I pay very low rates for car insurance. Other people I know have had accidents and many tickets, they pay a lot for car insurance. In this system, each person pays a different rate based on the consequences of their choices and actions. So what is wrong with this system? Why can't we use the exact same system for health insurance? If I eat right, exercise, and wash my hands then I will rarely get ill and should pay very low insurance rates. My neighbor eats junk food, smokes, and never exercises, has lots of medical issues and will for as long as he lives, shouldn't he pay a much higher rate for insurance? Why would anybody want a government system in which we will both pay the same rate? That is blatantly unfair to me since I make good choices and wont get sick as often. Furthermore, I have the choice of lots of different car insurance companies (Geico, Allstate, Nationwide, Progressive, etc.), this competition drives lower costs and better service. Why would I want to give up choice in favor of a monopoly? What is wrong with our car insurance system that somebody would not want the exact same system for our health care?""

Do most parents pay for their children's car insurance?
Ok, don't rant at me, I'm asking this question innocently. Basically, I want to know if it's common for parents to pay for their children's car insurance (I'm thinking of those 17, 18, 19, etc. who just passed their test and haven't moved out), or if the child is usually made to pay it themselves? I don't know if part time jobs will cover the cost or what (especially as I imagine they will usually pay for their own petrol), but 3000 a year does seem quite a bit for a teenager to be able to afford. And seems like more and more youngsters are getting cars... I don't think I would expect my parents to pay for mine when I pass my test, but then again I don't know how I'd be able to afford it myself either... So I'm looking for some insight on the topic.""

I need Insurance help?
Hey, I just got a full-time job that pays very well. I make roughly $1500 a month, and I was looking to get a new vehicle as a means of celebrating my new step into adulthood. The vehicle I was looking at was a 2005 Pontiac GTO. I'm 19 years old, so I would have to get my parents to help me with cosigning. That wouldn't be a problem, since my parents have good credit. Now, my parents said that they'd cosign if I pay for both the car payment and insurance monthly. I also pay $200 a month for medical insurance, phone bills, etc. The car payment monthly would be about $400 a month, so that would be about one check. My question is, does anyone know roughly how much insurance would be for me? I currently pay $122 a month on a 2002 Taurus, with just one speeding ticket on my record. Any ideas? Thanks""

New Car Insurance?
I have a little 2001 Saturn SL2 and I'm on my oldest sisters policy and it runs around $350 a month for both of us (I'm only 18 and she has like a 5 or 6 speeding tickets). My saturn is nothing but a big dent in my walllet so I've found a 2004 Hyundai Santa Fe that I want to get but my main concern is how much would my insurance go up? I haven't been in wreck and I don't have a speeding ticket to my name.

Mnemonic
This is an AU version of a standalone scene from Cantata that I rewrote with kissing. Because there was a lot of UST and I am weak.
Ao3
14 June 2180, Hades Gamma, Farinata System, SSV Myeongnyang
For a biotic, the armor never really comes off. What they carry under their skin is like a live wire, a current always in need of grounding.
Standing face-to-face with half a dozen L2 biotics holding the chairman of the Parliament Subcommittee for Transhuman Studies hostage on the MSV Ontario makes it a lot easier for Kaidan to see how much he takes for granted having a safe place to do it. And knowing how.
Reparations for the L2 side effects are a pipe dream. But a pipe dream Colin Daggett and his people needed to cling to, whatever the cost. And it had almost cost them everything.
Shepard doesn’t say much as they arrange for the survivors to be transferred to the Madrid’s brig and the engineering crew arrives to secure the Ontario for the trip to Arcturus. He says even less on the way through the airlock back to the ‘Yang, and the rest of the squad take their lead from him.
When they’re back on board the ship he disappears, sucking the air out of the room with him. They kit down without him.
“You’re an L2, aren’t you?” Pendergrass asks as she shoves her arms through the sleeves of her uniform, armor plating in a heap at her feet.
Beaudoin jabs her with an elbow.
“Yeah,” Kaidan murmurs, fingers tracing the amp port on the back of his neck when he removes the protection plate. He flexes his fingers, gravity well jumping into his touch. As he reaches for his chest plate to store it in his gear locker, an electric shock passes through him.
When 23:00 rolls around, Kaidan shows up in the mess as usual, figuring he’ll keep it simple tonight and just make some pasta. Shepard is there waiting, as usual, picking at a spot on the table while Kaidan pulls out a pot and finds a container of pasta. The entire time the water boils Shepard doesn’t say a word, stubbornly lost in thought.
Kaidan tells himself he’s not going to do more than olive oil and garlic – it’s been too long of a day for effort – but by the time he gets it to the table there’s parmesan cheese, parsley, and even a little red pepper in the mix.
“You going to tell me what’s up, or do I get to guess?” Kaidan asks when he sits down across from him and hands off a fork. He spent too much energy on going above and beyond with the red pepper to bother with a second bowl. They’ll just have to share.
Shepard looks up, almost in surprise. “Just thinking.”
“You’ve been thinking ever since you got Chairman Burns through the airlock. Maybe you should think out loud.”
The gravity well churns as Shepard stirs eddies in it, in tune with the twirl of his fork in the pasta bowl. “Everything that happened on that ship hinged on what Daggett did with his pistol.”
His toying intensifies, until blue energy shimmers around his knuckles. This one’s been chewing at him. A snap of electricity skips between his finger and the fork, and he drops it with an annoyed mutter. He looks up.
“You pulled the gun out of his hands,” he says.
And Shepard had put a bullet between his eyes. The fight had gone out of the rest pretty quickly.
“He wasn’t going to put it down,” Kaidan says. “We all knew it.”
“No. He wasn’t. And if you hadn’t been there, that standoff turns into a clusterfuck where everyone dies.”
A soft smile tugs at Kaidan’s lips. “Guess it’s a good thing I was there.”
Shepard picks up the fork again, staring at it with an unfocused gaze before he stabs it back in the bowl and twirls more pasta.
“I couldn’t have done what you did. I can’t refine a field like that. I was prepared to shoot everyone in that room. But you pulled the gun right out of his hands.”
Only because Shepard had given him the chance. Whether Shepard had done it with purpose or actually hesitated is a question he hasn’t been in a hurry to examine too closely.
“We work together, remember? In case you hadn’t noticed, we’ve gotten pretty good at it.”
Shepard huffs. “Yeah. We have.”
“But you’re just gonna get bent out of shape about not being able to do everything yourself, anyway.”
“Have you met me?” Shepard says with a helpless shrug.
“Yeah, I’ve had the pleasure,” Kaidan says with a chuckle. He pushes his chair back. “Come on, then.”
Shepard casts him a suspicious look. “Come where?”
“To the gym.”
“Alenko—”
“Come on.” He nods towards the elevator and starts walking, smirking a little when Shepard’s chair scrapes against the floor and his feet hit the deckplates.
“You’re just dying to give me a taste of my own medicine, aren’t you,” Shepard grouches when they board the lift.
“Oh, definitely.”
“You’re the worst.”
“Apparently not when it comes to taking people’s pistols out of their hands.”
Shepard chuckles, though he tries to choke off a smile by looking down at his feet. When they get to the gym Kaidan digs a canteen out of his locker and sets it down on one of the sparring mats.
“I’m guessing that your training didn’t include a lot of control drills,” he says.
Shepard shakes his head. “Tulak wasn’t big on control. Overwhelming tidal force tends to be the krogan approach.”
“You don’t say.”
“Sarcasm does not become you, Alenko.”
Kaidan grins and points to the canteen. “Start simple. Just lift it off the ground.”
Shepard rolls his eyes, but taps into the gravity well, corona enveloping him in a shroud of snapping blue tendrils. The hairs on Kaidan’s arms stand on end.
It’s so rare he gets to just watch Shepard work. All unrestrained power, from the loose, angry snarl of his corona to the sweeping mnemonics, make him seem larger than life. When he swipes the canteen off the floor he does it with his entire arm. The canteen leaps into the air, nearly hitting the ceiling before Shepard wrangles it. He only holds it still for half a second before sending it skidding to the other side of the gym.
“Hm,” Kaidan says.
Shepard gives him a withering look before marching off to fetch the wayward canteen. “It’s small. I don’t do well with small.”
“Not sure the size trips you up as much as you think it does,” Kaidan muses. “That mnemonic of yours applies some pretty impressive force automatically, so you’re already playing catch up if you’re trying to control the speed or direction.”
“See, I can’t tell if you’re complimenting me or giving me shit.”
“Both.”
“Har.”
Shepard resets the canteen and comes back to Kaidan to try it again, standing close but not so close their fields intersect. Kaidan watches through three variations that all end almost the same way, too much force being applied to the canteen, making it nearly impossible for Shepard to control where it goes, or where it doesn’t.
Doesn’t matter that he’s not accomplishing what it intends. The way the gravity well cants under his touch, the way his corona lights him ablaze like a flickering star, the way it caresses every nerve in Kaidan’s body like a swash of silk is mesmerizing. Kaidan swallows before trying to speak.
“Good news is, if we ever need someone to punt a suspicious canteen into space, I know who to call.”
Shepard rolls his eyes. “And if you’re not around to yank pistols out of terrorist hands?”
“Well, first, I will be around. But second, as for the pistol, yanking it towards you isn’t so different from kicking it away from you.” He cracks a grin. “In your case you just need to be prepared to duck.”
“Have I mentioned that separating the pistol from the person holding it wouldn’t end well for anyone?” Shepard says. “If you were to go hold that canteen in your palm and ask me to do what I just did, you wouldn’t like me very much.”
I doubt that.
“One problem at a time,” Kaidan says. “Let’s work on controlling the canteen by itself, then we’ll add clutter.”
“And how do you suggest we do that?”
“You need a new mnemonic. You’re fighting yourself by adding force and trying to take it away at the same time.”
“I’m sensing a metaphor.”
Kaidan smirks. “Think that says more about you than it does me.” Before Shepard can protest he raises an arm. “Watch me. You don’t have to use my mnemonic, but I want you to see something different so you can visualize it.”
Shepard folds his arms across his chest, but does what Kaidan asks. A nervous thrill runs through him at the undivided attention.
Kaidan waves a wrist, a hard-learned, hard-fought mnemonic that now feels as natural as breathing. Dark energy rushes through him, responsive and willing, as his fingers flex and settle a field over the canteen. Very little mass-shifting needed to pick up a light-weight canteen, which makes it tricky to keep from doing exactly what Shepard did – send it spinning out of control. But Kaidan has spent years perfecting his ability to do exactly this, so the canteen rises off the floor until it reaches eye level. Kaidan closes his fist and holds it still, floating almost motionless in mid-air.
“That mnemonic is so damned subtle,” Shepard says with an appreciative shake of his head. A flush builds at the back of Kaidan’s neck.
“Easier for me that way.”
Shepard grunts and unfolds his arms. “I was never good at levitation.”
“Because your mnemonics always apply force.”
“Need force to yank that pistol.”
“Sure, but if you want to control it, you need to learn how to hold it still.”
“I’m not good at still.”
“I know,” Kaidan says, lips curving into a smile. “So come here and let me show you.”
Shepard strays a step closer into Kaidan’s biotic field. The blend of auras creates a low keen through his nerves, familiar but always striking. The canteen wavers before falling to the ground.
“Sorry,” Shepard mumbles, but doesn’t back away.
“It’s fine,” Kaidan says, lifting the canteen again with another float of his palm.
Their eyes lock for a moment before Shepard clears his throat and looks down at Kaidan’s hand.
“You put everything in your wrist.”
“Yeah,” he manages. “You do it all with your arms.”
“Yeah.”
“So maybe, if you’re looking for finesse, try to create a mnemonic that’s a little, uh, smaller.”
“With my wrist.”
“Right. Um, I’ll show you. Here.” He steps in front of Shepard, angling his body to align their right arms. He takes Shepard’s right hand guides it to his wrist, tingle running down his spine when his fingers close around it. Shepard glances at him with soft eyes that stop the breath in his throat, but doesn’t object.
“Hands-on teacher?”
“Best way to learn,” Kaidan replies, gaze flicking to Shepard’s mouth before going back to the canteen. “Just follow my lead. Don’t act on the canteen. Concentrate on what my arm does. Visualize it.”
“Sure,” Shepard murmurs.
Kaidan reaches into the gravity well, his own corona unfurling, a steady candle to Shepard’s flaring torch. Goosebumps rise on Shepard’s arm, a subtle reminder that he’s human after all, one Kaidan is almost never close enough to witness.
He takes a deep breath and flexes his wrist, Shepard’s fingers loose and feather-light against his skin. A crackle of dark energy passes between them before he snares the canteen and turns his wrist palm-up to lift it off the floor, Shepard close enough his breath washes over Kaidan’s cheek. The canteen wavers but Kaidan keeps it afloat for several seconds, the mingle of auras, ripple of kinetic energy and closeness of Shepard enough to make him dizzy.
He lets it go with a clatter and puts space between them.
“Does that help?” he asks, trying not to sound breathless.
“Yeah. It does.” Shepard’s gaze stays on him, still and steady. “Might take a while to hard-wire my brain for something in the wrist.”
“Doesn’t have to be that. It could be something else. But you associate those big movements with force. Take that away, you might have more luck with leaving velocity out of the initial execution, so you can add it how you need it. Have more control over it.”
Shepard’s mouth crooks in a half-smile. “Sure I’m not a lost cause when it comes to control?”
“I’m sure.”
Shepard breaks his gaze and focuses on the canteen, brow furrowed in concentration. Twice he catches himself using his arm, then nearly wrenches his wrist trying to restrict the movement.
“It’s so ingrained,” he says with a shake of his head.
“That’s why they work,” Kaidan says with a smile. “Here.” He steps close once again, positions reversed with his hand on Shepard’s wrist this time. “Let me help.”
“Fuck, your hands are cold,” Shepard says with a laugh.
Hastily, he loosens his grip. “Sorry.”
“No, it’s fine,” Shepard says with a grin. “Go on.”
Gently, Kaidan closes his fingers again. Shepard trains his eyes on the canteen, though they dart to Kaidan ever so briefly.
Shepard’s corona is so bright, so fierce, it’s a wonder he can wrangle it at all. Kaidan breathes in deep, letting his own kindle, the snick and crackle as they blend together forming a resonant hum that hovers just under his skin.
When Shepard’s arm moves, Kaidan tightens his grip, keeping the motion small. Instead of his usual languid, fluid posture, Shepard’s arm is stiff and resistant against him. The canteen spins in a circle but stays on the ground.
“Breathe, Shepard,” Kaidan says softly. “Just let it happen.”
Shepard inhales deep, like someone trying to relearn how. This time they move together, Kaidan picking up the slack when Shepard falters, until the canteen hovers briefly in the air. It’s more under Kaidan’s control than Shepard’s, but it’s a start, and that’s what matters.
They gutter out and the canteen falls, but Kaidan doesn’t let go and doesn’t step away, not yet, not quite yet, not while the remnants of kinetic energy are still sharp in the air and he has to remind himself to breathe, too.
“How do you do that?” Shepard murmurs. “You worked around me, without…taking over. How do you do that?”
Their eyes lock for just a moment. God Kaidan could get lost there if he’s not careful. “Practice. Years of it.”
Let go.
He means to. He means to. In his head he loosens his hold on Shepard’s wrist, drops his hand away and puts space between them. That’s what he tells himself to do. That’s what he intends to do.
But while he does loosen his grip, instead of fall away, Kaidan’s fingertips brush Shepard’s knuckles, the pad of his thumb running along the round muscle of his palm.
It’s an accident. Just an accident. So many of their touches are, but rather than move or pull away, rather than let it be just another one of those excusable, explainable slips, Shepard exhales, the breath fluttering out of him, then splays his fingers wider, as if making room for Kaidan’s to slot between them.
Let go, let go.
But instead he explores the open space Shepard has left for him, fingertips light, hesitant, ghosting Shepard’s skin as he finds where they fit, hovering, hoping, but never daring to rest. Never giving up the ruse.
It’s an accident. It doesn’t mean anything.
Except it does.
Shepard stays still as a stone save for the rise and fall of his chest. They’re close enough now their cheeks almost touch, though whether Kaidan moves or Shepard does to close that gap he can’t say.
The next time Kaidan’s fingers trespass through that open space, Shepard closes his around them and traps them there.
Kaidan’s breath hitches.
The gravity well sighs as Shepard calls to it, glow of dark energy limming their hands, accompanied by a soundless hum that strums every nerve in Kaidan’s body before settling in his groin. Without thinking his other hand comes to rest on Shepard’s hip, needing something, anything, to hold onto.
A soft sound stirs in Shepard’s throat. Kaidan’s hand doesn’t stay on that hip for long, because Shepard seeks those fingers out, too, lacing them together. Kaidan folds both arms until Shepard is surrounded by them. There’s no imagining any space between them now – their cheeks rest against each other, Kaidan tightening his hold until Shepard is snug against his chest.
Shepard turns his head, but after briefly meeting each other’s gaze, his eyes drift down to Kaidan’s mouth.
Kaidan can still let go. There’s still a way out. Chalk it up to adrenaline, nerves leftover from the standoff on the Ontario. They can walk it off, laugh, pretend it never happened, continue on like they always have.
But he doesn’t let go, and then the millimeters between Shepard’s lips and Kaidan’s no longer exist and the window is gone.
Shepard’s mouth is warm, soft, lips tinged with the salt of his sweat. They start out slow, cautious, neither of them daring to think about it too hard, but that’s not a problem for long, because soon there’s no room to think about anything at all.
Nothing else matters but this.
Slow and cautious becomes deep and headlong, Kaidan pushing his tongue between Shepard’s teeth, Shepard sighing into his mouth and taking him in. His fingers tighten around Kaidan’s, the glow of dark energy rippling out from their joined hands until it swallows them whole. Kaidan gasps at the sensation.
Shepard kisses him harder.
God.
Kaidan wants to spin him around, throw his arms around his neck and meet him head on, give in to everything, all of it, but he can’t bear the thought of turning loose of that hand.
They part when they run out of air, both straining to catch their breath, fingers still entwined, Shepard still firmly ensconced in Kaidan’s arms as his corona fades.
Shepard rests his cheek against Kaidan’s, ensconcing himself a little further.
“Oh,” he says softly.
“Yeah.”
Shepard’s fingers flex within his, twining and retwining, never letting go.
“You…don’t seem surprised.”
Kaidan closes his eyes, breathing him in, a star he’s somehow pulled down out of the heavens and trapped right here in his arms. “No. Felt it…for a long time now.”
“Oh.”
“…Yeah.”
Their coronas may have faded, but the mingle of their biotic fields is a constant, soothing whisper under Kaidan’s skin. A small, contented sound slips from Shepard’s throat.
“Why didn’t I see it?”
Kaidan huffs. “To be fair, I don’t think either of us are very good at this kind of thing.”
Shepard tightens his grip on Kaidan’s fingers and pulls them to his chest. The race of Shepard’s heart thrums under their joined hands. If Kaidan had any illusions about letting him go, they’re gone now.
“I think I’d like to learn,” Shepard says.
Kaidan’s stomach flips. “Me too.”
They stay still, Kaidan content to hold him, Shepard content to be held, until their lips find each other once more. Kissing Shepard is easy, effortless, like it’s something they were meant to do, a safe place for the live current running under their skin to go to ground.
Shepard, against all evidence to the contrary, is…safe.
Shepard gazes at him when they part, and butterflies cut loose in Kaidan’s stomach.
“You’re very good at that,” Shepard murmurs.
“We’re very good at a lot of things.”
“Yeah. We are.” He draws Kaidan’s hand up to press a kiss to his knuckles. “What do we do now?”
“I don’t know,” Kaidan admits. “What do you want?”
“You.”
A shiver runs down Kaidan’s spine, the euphoria of that one, single word enough to make him lightheaded. So simple. So complicated. They’ll have choices to make, all of them with compromises and consequences. But that’s something for tomorrow. Right now there is only the truth.
“I want that, too.”
Shepard releases Kaidan’s hand to turn until they’re face to face, then runs his fingers through the hairs growing over Kaidan’s right temple. All the while those glittering eyes search Kaidan’s face, as though reconciling all the things he knows with the things he’s learning for the first time.
The corners of his eyes crinkle as a smile spreads across his face, pure, open, and full of possibility. “Taste of my own medicine, huh?”
“Well…” Kaidan shrugs helplessly, and Shepard’s grin only gets deeper.
“Seems like I should have let you teach me a few things a long time ago.”
Kaidan flexes his fingers, a curl of dark energy igniting in his palm that draws out goosebumps along Shepard’s arm. “All in the wrist.”
Shepard laughs. It’s like music. “You and me.”
“I like that,” Kaidan murmurs, before kissing him again. “I like that a lot.”
